Last November Moonen Yachts appointed the first female carpenter. Appointing women in technical position fits in Moonen’s long-term strategy to have more women on the workshop floor.
LADIES FIRST
21 year old Lotte Santvoort is determined to become an all-round furniture maker specialised in ship’s interiors. Currently she’s combining her education at Koning Willem 1 College in ‘s-Hertogenbosch with an apprenticeship at Moonen Yachts. Appointing Lotte is part of Moonen’s strategy to have more women at the shop floor. At this moment she’s the only female in the outfitting department, but that’s about to change. Lotte definitely paves the way for Moonen’s next generation carpenters. The female touch, combined with a good sense of humour and passion for true craftsmanship, make her a valuable asset for Moonen Yachts. “What I definitely want to share with other females that like to enter a more male oriented profession: Go for it, follow that dream. Do what you like, that’s most important. Certainly listen to the opinions of others, but don’t let them get in your way.
FOCUS ON POSSIBILITIES
On the question, why she wanted to become ship’s interior carpenter Lotte replies: “I chose this job because I was often tinkering with wood at home, and what could be better than turning my hobby into my profession? There are only a few women in this industry, but I don’t care much about that. As long as the group around you is great to work with, it doesn’t matter if they are male or female. We all share that same passion. After my graduation, I want to develop my skills, use my creativity and focus on the possibilities and opportunities within the company.
